Couchsurfing alternatives that do not charge for hospitality
August 31, 2026 · Journal
Most “Couchsurfing alternatives” lists are written by platforms that want your waitlist. This one is written by a steward-owned network that cannot sell access. If a site charges you to message a host, to verify your identity, or to appear in search, it is not a hospitality commons. It is a listing business.
What broke
Couchsurfing converted from a nonprofit into a growth company, then gated messaging and verification behind payment. Hosts drowned in cold requests. Guests paid for the privilege of being ignored. Safety became a SKU. The product lesson is older than the brand: when hospitality is the inventory, paid ranking and paid safety destroy the inventory.
The field in 2026
- BeWelcome — volunteer nonprofit, ~280k members, free, broad geography, slower product, mixed response rates.
- Couchers.org — 501(c)(3), free forever, modern CS-shaped product, still small relative to the old network.
- Trustroots — hitch and slow-travel circles, free, lighter moderation by design.
- Warmshowers — cyclists only, nonprofit, one-time fee. Hikers are asked not to join.
- Servas — interviews and annual dues. Too slow for a trail window.
- Facebook trail-angel groups — informal, uninsured, no identity layer Grith would call verification.
- Grith — thru-hikers, three launch cities, events then stays, verification paid by us, hospitality free forever under a purpose trust.
How to choose without a leaderboard
Ask four questions. Who is allowed in? Who pays for identity? Can money change search order? What happens at 2 a.m. if a stay goes wrong? Grith’s answers are: thru-hikers and their hosts; we pay; never; Safe Exit books a bed and we look later. If you need a host in Lisbon next week, use BeWelcome or Couchers. If you are walking toward Asheville, that is us — when the city is actually open.
Do not trust a map of 493,000 hosts. Trust a count of responsive people with a live window. We publish that count on every city page.
Questions people actually type
Is Grith free like BeWelcome?
Stays, messaging, ranking, and verification are free to members. Optional ticketed gatherings and member-led experiences exist; they never buy visibility. Identity checks are billed to Grith, not to you.
Why not just join Couchers?
If you want a general, worldwide CS replacement, Couchers is a serious nonprofit attempt. Grith is narrower on purpose. Warmshowers held host density by restricting who belongs. We do the same on trail.
