Why events should come before stays

August 31, 2026 · Journal

A government ID proves you exist. It does not prove how you behave in someone’s house. Paid verification that does not include a human who has stood in a room with you is a receipt, not a reference.

The request spam problem

Open messaging to every host is how Couchsurfing became unusable for the people who actually had a spare floor. Grith hosts publish a date window. Guests request only those dates, and only after the city is open. New cities start with gatherings so the graph exists before the first overnight.

Vouching is local

RSVP. Show up. Give or receive a vouch with someone else on the list. Standing follows hosting, events, guiding, moderating, translating, and those vouches. It decays. It cannot be bought. High-demand hosts see requests ordered by standing band, never by money.

When a stay goes wrong

Safe Exit is one control. We book and pay a hostel bed in your city from listed partners. No essay. Investigation happens after you are out. Private reports get an outcome told to the reporter. Silent bans are how paying networks rot; we publish the counts.

Questions people actually type

Do I have to go to an event to stay?

A new city is viable with gatherings even before it has fifty hosts. Stays in an open city still sit on the vouch and window system, not on cold DMs.

Why is verification free?

Charging for safety selects for people who can pay, not people who are safe. Grith treats identity as infrastructure and puts it on our bill.
