Trail gap
Warmshowers is for cyclists. Thru-hikers need a different network.

Warmshowers is one of the few hospitality networks that still works. It works because it is narrow. Touring cyclists host touring cyclists. Hosts know you will arrive late, want a shower, park a bike, and leave at dawn. The FAQ is explicit: if you are travelling by other means, this is not your community.
Thru-hikers keep landing on that FAQ anyway. Google shows Warmshowers for “free stay on trail” and “hospitality for hikers.” The page then tells you to leave. Trail-angel Facebook groups and FarOut comments fill the hole. That is not a network. It is a rumor.
Why a cycling network cannot be a hiking network
A bike tourer needs a place to lock a frame and wash kit. A thru-hiker needs a floor, a shower, a laundry run, and a host who understands zero-day timing. Those are different houses. Mixing them burns both cultures. Warmshowers is right to refuse hikers. The mistake is that no equivalent existed for people walking long trails.
Grith is that equivalent, and only that. We launch in Portland, Asheville, and Boulder — trail towns, not a fifty-city vanity map. A city is not “open” until fifty verified, responsive hosts exist. Until then we print the real count. We do not invent supply so the homepage looks full.
Events before a spare room
Couchsurfing decayed when strangers messaged strangers. Warmshowers survives because the bike is a shared credential. Hiking has no equivalent unless you build one. Ours is in-person gatherings. You RSVP, you show up, you vouch. Stays follow the vouch graph. Unsolicited requests are not a feature.
- Identity verification is mandatory to host or request — and Grith pays for it. We do not sell safety.
- Availability is a dated window. When it ends, you leave search. Silence is not a live host.
- Safe Exit books and pays a hostel bed the same hour, no explanation required.
- Hospitality stays free forever. That is a charter clause, not a launch promise.
What to use until a city is open
If your trail town is not at the density gate yet, we show trail-association gatherings and a capped hostel-affiliate fallback. We will not fake host profiles. Join the founding group in the city you actually live in or walk through. Standing comes from hosting, running events, and vouching — not from a subscription.
Questions people actually type
Can I use Warmshowers if I am thru-hiking?
No. Warmshowers is for touring cyclists. Their own FAQ says travelling by other means is not appropriate. Use a hiker network, trail angels you already know, or Grith in a city that has opened.
Is Grith only for PCT and AT hikers?
We launch on trail towns that serve long-distance hikers. The first three cities are Portland, Asheville, and Boulder. Other cities print a founding count until they are real.
